RECENTLY REPORTED INCIDENTS
05.05.2009: 0430 UTC: Posn: 13:08N - 049:09E: Gulf of Aden.
Pirates armed with automatic weapons chased a tanker underway. Vessel contacted coalition warship for assistance and made evasive manoeuvres to delay / prevent boarding. A helicopter arrived on scene and prevented the pirates from boarding the vessel.
09.05.2009: 0001-0600 LT: Pier 5D, Callao port, Peru.
Robbers boarded a container ship at berth during cargo operations. Despite having four shore watchmen and extra lighting, the robbers managed to steal ship's rescue boat's engine and escape. Local authorities informed.
12.05.2009: 1215 UTC: Posn: 01:02.4S – 057:18.1E, About 740 nm east of Mogadishu, Somalia.
Nine pirates in two boats chased and fired upon a container vessel with guns and RPG. Master carried out evasive manoeuvres and the pirates aborted the attempt after 45 minutes. No casualty to crew.
13.05.2009: 1307 UTC: Posn: 13:17N – 049:12E. Gulf of Aden.
Two boats with five pirates in each boat chased and fired upon a bulk carrier with automatic rifles and RPG. An orange and white coloured mother vessel was noticed around 3 nm astern of the vessel. Master carried out evasive manoeuvres, increased speed and contacted coalition warship. A helicopter arrived at the location and the pirates aborted the attempt.
15.05.2009: 0639 UTC: Posn: 14:44N – 051:15E: Gulf of Aden.
Four speed boats chased a RORO ship. The pirates wore masks and were armed with automatic weapons. They came as close as 500 meters from the vessel. Vessel made evasive manoeuvres and fired two flares at the pirate boats. Master contacted coalition warships for assistance. Thirty minutes later, a helicopter flew over the location. The speed boats aborted the attempt and regrouped around a suspected, mother vessel 4 nm. The mother vessel was towing a skiff and was white in colour.
17.05.2009: 0750 UTC: Posn: 14:09N – 051:55E, Gulf of Aden.
Four pirates in a boat chased and fired upon an oil tanker underway. Master raised distress call, increased speed and carried out evasive manoeuvres. Seeing coalition warships pirates aborted the attack and moved away.
18.05.2009: Posn: 12:46N – 048:05E: Gulf of Aden.
Pirates in two skiffs attempted to board a tanker underway. The tanker took evasive manoeuvres, fired rocket flares and contacted warship for assistance. Later, pirates aborted the attempt and returned to mother vessel.
19.05.2009: 0755 LT: Posn: 13:16.8N – 048:59.8E: Gulf of Aden.
A high speed boat chased a tanker underway. Master altered course to increase CPA and contacted warship for assistance. The speed boat came very close but due to ship’s evasive manoeuvres, aborted the attempt and moved away.
19.05.2009: 0026 UTC: Posn: 09:59S – 054:00E: About 880 nm SE Mogadishu, Somalia
Pirates, in skiffs, chased and fired upon a chemical tanker underway. Master made evasive manoeuvres and escaped from the pirates.
19.05.2009: 0214 LT: Posn: 12:56N-048:30E: Gulf of Aden.
Pirates armed with automatic weapons chased and fired upon a chemical tanker underway. The tanker took evasive manoeuvres and contacted warship for assistance. Pirates later aborted the attack.
21.05.2009: 0320 LT: Lagos roads: Nigeria.
Six robbers armed with automatic weapons boarded a general cargo ship at anchor. They broke down master and chief officer’s cabin doors and stole ships cash. Master raised a distress signal. Robbers left the ship 20 minutes later after stealing ship and personal properties.
